Grand Haven Twp., MI (WGHN) – The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal jet ski crash on the Grand River in Grand Haven Township. Deputies were called around 8:50 p.m. Sunday, September 14, to the 14000 block of Ammeraal Avenue for a report of a missing man in the water.

Investigators say a 28-year-old man was driving a jet ski eastbound with an 18-year-old female passenger when they struck a navigational buoy. Both were thrown into the water. Neither was wearing a life jacket. The 18-year-old was able to climb back onto the jet ski before being helped aboard a nearby boat by good Samaritans. The man was last seen in the water but did not resurface.

Search efforts involved local fire departments, the U S Coast Guard, and the Sheriff’s Office drone and dive teams. The victim was located several hours later in about 10 feet of water and pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
