Update on Fulton Avenue construction update

By Mary Ellen Murphy Sep 10, 2025 | 6:36 AM

Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Here is another update on the Fulton Avenue construction project from The City of Grand Haven.

It has been another very productive week along Fulton Street as crews made significant progress on underground infrastructure work and began work at the final intersection at 5th Street. The latest project activities and the upcoming schedule for Fulton Street construction are detailed below. Progress photographs are attached as well.

Last week’s project activities:

·         Driveway approaches between Second and Third Street were completed. The concrete is not yet cured, so please refrain from driving on the approaches until Thursday, 9/11.

·         The water main installation between Fourth and Fifth Street is about ¾ complete and will be completed this week.

·         Pavement removal in the Fifth Street intersection was completed.

·         The road rebuilding process began and was completed between the Third and Fourth Street intersection. It is prepped for concrete.

·         Restoration activities between Second and Third Street were completed.

This week’s project activities:

·         Crews will finish water main installation between Fourth and Fifth Street.

·         Sanitary sewer installation between Fourth and Fifth Street will be installed from approximately 9/10-9/12.

·         Concrete curb and gutter will be poured towards the end of the week between Third and Fourth Street.

·         Restoration activities will continue.

Upcoming:

·         Water main testing and water services are expected the week of 9/15.

·         Base paving from Second to Fourth Street – exact date to be shared as soon as possible.

·         Continued restoration activities in previously completed project areas.

·         Utility installation in the Fifth Street intersection.

Underground utilities are expected to be completed throughout the entire project in the next two to three weeks!

Construction schedules can often change, but we will do our best to provide up-to-date information in each update or let you know if there are time-sensitive updates.

Reminder: As crews progress along Fulton, I want to send a friendly reminder about underground sprinkling in the City’s right-of-way. If you have underground sprinkling in the parkway (the area between the sidewalk and the street), we recommend salvaging the sprinkler heads and severing the line(s) that run beneath the sidewalk to the parkway. Neither the city nor the contractor is responsible for restoring the irrigation installed in the parkway.

Access to Properties

Access to properties will remain open unless there is active construction happening in front of your driveway or concrete work is in progress or curing. If you have questions or concerns about parking, please look for the on-site inspector (Mark Anthony with Abonmarche Engineering) or talk to one of the contractors for help. Feel free to reach me at 616-847-4888 or dkollewehr@grandhaven.org as well.

Traffic Control

Fulton Avenue, from Second Street to the Fifth Street intersection, remains closed to through traffic, although local traffic may use the roadway between Second and Fourth Street to access driveways/properties. The intersection at First Street is open to through traffic to Jackson and Washington, and the Second and Third Street intersections are also graveled and open to traffic. Please be sure to stay alert and watch for detour routes and changes to detours as the project heads east on Fulton. Exercise caution and be observant when driving or walking through the construction zone. Follow sidewalk detours and do not enter the active construction site. If you happen to encounter any issues with detours, please report them so our team can look them over and address them if necessary.

If you have any other needs or concerns during this time, please feel free to share them with me or DPW Director, Michael England (616-847-3493). If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at dkollewehr@grandhaven.org or 616-847-4888.
