Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – The Loutit District Library is thrilled to announce the development of two new creation spaces. Through a generous grant provided by the Waanders Family Fund, the library is creating a Makerspace, a hands-on learning, technology, and innovation center, along with a new traditional Art Studio. The library will be working with local design firm Architektura, which has been selected to lead the development of this dynamic space and handle construction bids.
The library aims to enrich lives, and these new spaces will allow even more programming that both educates and sparks the imagination. The new Makerspace and Art Studio will feature a diverse array of tools and resources, encouraging exploration and hands-on learning. From 3D printing, etching, and robotics to traditional crafting and art forms, the space will provide a platform for individuals of all ages and skill levels to engage in collaborative projects, develop new skills, and bring their creative ideas to life.
“We are incredibly touched by the Waanders family’s generosity and their deep belief in the power of libraries,” said Ellen Peters, Executive Director of the library. “The Makerspace has been a dream of ours for some time, so when the family approached us with a kind offer to do something meaningful for the library, we were excited to suggest this space and its possibilities. The Waanders share the same values for lifelong learning, and they wanted to honor their parents’ love for community, innovation, and libraries.”
“Our parents were committed to this community and its progress,” said Peter Waanders. “The library’s vision of a Makerspace is a perfect legacy. Our mother, Judy, was a lifelong educator who worked in the Grand Haven area schools for decades. She was an early advocate for computers in school libraries. Likewise, our father John committed his professional life to JSJ Corp., creating jobs, training workers, making things, and innovating. Judy and John also owned The Bookman, a well-loved bookstore in Grand Haven, for 25 years. Both parents were committed to serving the community and created a charitable foundation to continue that legacy. They would be proud to support this project.” The Waanders children include John Waanders, James Waanders, Nick Waanders, Deb Haithcox, Amy Jeninga, and Peter Waanders. The family still maintains connections in the area and is proud to see the library thrive.
The Loutit District Library extends its deepest gratitude to the Waanders family for their thoughtful gift and their dedication to the enrichment of the community.
Located in Grand Haven, MI, the Loutit District Library is a public library serving the cities of Grand Haven and Ferrysburg, and the townships of Grand Haven, Robinson, and Port Sheldon. Dedicated to expanding horizons, enriching minds, and engaging the community, the library provides a diverse range of resources and programs for all ages.
**The library would also like to add a pottery studio with kiln(s)! This will be Phase 2 of the project, for which the library will need more financial support.**
