(Lansing, MI) – A bill to stop lawmakers being paid if they miss the July 1 statutory deadline to approve the fiscal budget failed to get enough votes to pass the state House yesterday. Majority Republicans came up four votes shy of the 74 needed to pass the measure with two-thirds support. The measure would have stopped their pay on July 1 if the budget wasn’t done, but would resume it with back pay once the spending plan was approved.
House Speaker Matt Hall says the idea came from Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, who is running for governor as an independent candidate.
