Grand Haven Residents Push for Action on Growing Urban Deer Population

Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – It’s not uncommon to see deer wandering through Grand Haven’s neighborhoods, but for many residents, the frequency has become a concern. Residents made their voices heard at Grand Haven’s City Council meeting Monday.

The issue of deer overpopulation was brought before the Grand Haven City Council this week by the Forest Management Committee, which estimates that more than 112 deer may be living within the city’s wooded areas — possibly even more. Jean Madden is with the sustainability and energy commission and co founder of the group Save our Forest Grand Haven.

Wildlife experts agree the city may need to reassess how it handles the deer population. Michigan DNR biologist Nik Kalejs said communities like Grand Haven should consider the broader impacts of deer on their environment and residents.

As the city continues its review, council members and residents alike appear ready for meaningful change to address what many see as a growing problem in their neighborhoods.
