Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) –  On Monday night, Grand Haven City Council unanimously approved changes to the city’s zoning ordinance, officially allowing short-term rentals in the Center Town area—but with some key restrictions.

Under the new rules, buildings must use their ground floor space for retail or commercial purposes. Residential or parking space on the ground floor? That won’t fly. Also, any parking for rental units must be placed behind the building, to keep street parking open for visitors and shoppers.

Grand Haven City Planner Brian Urquhart:

City officials hope the move will breathe new life into the district and bring more foot traffic to local businesses. The Center Town District stretches from North 6th Street to Jackson, and from Franklin Street to US-31.
