(Grand Rapids, MI) – Judge Christina Mims has signed an order to destroy all arrest records of former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr. Schurr had been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Patrick Lyoya in April 2022 when the two were fighting over control of the officer’s Taser after a traffic stop.
Cooley Law School professor Tracey Brame:
A jury deadlocked on the charge this year and Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker decided to not try Schurr again after the mistrial was declared. WOOD TV 8 states that the former officer’s attorneys cited a state law that says records and data should be “expunged or destroyed, as appropriate” if the charges against a defendant are dismissed before trial.
