(Grand Haven, MI) – U.S. Coast Guard Seaman Joseph Turk is being credited as a hero for rescuing a 97-year-old man who fell off the Grand Haven pier at the Coast Guard Festival in Grand Haven this week. He jumped into the water immediately when the man lost his balance when he was resting with a walker and fell in. He spoke with WOOD TV 8.
Turk was in the water for more than 20 minutes keeping the man afloat and says he had completed a session of surface swimmer training a few days before. He says it was a team effort, noting they quickly got a big basket in the water to help get the man out.
