Shelby Township, Mich. (WGHN) — Cindy Lewis, 56, co-owner of Lewis Adventure Farm and Zoo, has died after being struck by a vehicle in the business’s parking lot, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred around 7:45 a.m. Friday. Deputies from the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call reporting that someone had been hit by a vehicle and was trapped underneath. When they arrived, Lewis had already been removed from beneath the vehicle and was transported to a nearby hospital, where she passed away on Sunday.
According to the sheriff’s office, the vehicle was driven by a 61-year-old woman from New Era who is an employee of the farm. Preliminary findings suggest the driver did not see Lewis as she was entering the parking lot. Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role.
The case will be reviewed by the Oceana County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office described Mrs. Lewis as “a positive, energetic pillar of our community, integral in the continued growth and development of the family business.” They extended their deepest condolences to the Lewis family, noting the wide-reaching impact of her loss.
On Monday, Lewis Farms released a public statement via Facebook:
