(Grand Rapids, MI) – The National Weather Service confirms six tornadoes hit west Michigan late Thursday night. The strongest was an EF-1 twister that began near Charlotte in Eaton County and moved into Lansing with 100-mile-per-hour peak winds. Two more EF-1 tornadoes have been confirmed in Allegan County and both had top winds of 95 mph. Kent County had an EF-1 tornado, and Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties had two EF-0 tornadoes.

Allegan and Kalamazoo counties are in states of emergency because of severe storms that swept through west Michigan Thursday night. Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Jen Strebs says it’s been an incredibly difficult time for our residents, and adds the county just marked the one year anniversary on May 7 of an EF-2 tornado. Allegan County Administrator Rob Sarro says the amount of property damage in the county was surprising, and emergency management coordinator Sarah Clark is asking residents to be patient.

She is leading the damage assessment effort.
