Canadian Record Store Owner Finds 1962 Beatles Audition Tape

(Vancouver, British Columbia) – A Canadian record store owner is discovering that what he thought was a bootleg Beatles demo is an authentic recording. Rob Firth, who owns Neptoon Records in Vancouver, British Columbia, says he picked up a reel-to-reel tape labeled “Beatles 60s Demos” a few years ago, but listened to it for the first time last week.

The Beatles — with Pete Best on drums — recorded the audition demo for Decca Records on January 1st, 1962. Decca proved tough to please and told The Beatles “no thanks.” Firth posted his find on Instagram and included a video of the reel-to-reel playing the song “Money.” Firth said if Paul McCartney walks into his store, he’ll give Sir Paul the tape. He added that he’s willing to give a copy to Decca Records if they want to release it to help make up for the mistake they made by passing up on The Beatles.
