Ottawa County, MI (WGHN) – The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a Sexual Assault that occurred on Sunday, September 8th at approximately 8:05 p.m. in the area of US-31 near Stanton Street in Port Sheldon Township. At that time deputies were dispatched to make contact with a female caller, who reported being followed in her vehicle by a male subject and touched inappropriately once both vehicles stopped at a gas station (Stanton Corners) in the area. The male suspect then fled the scene prior to deputies’ arrival.
Further investigation showed that a male suspect had followed the female victim as she drove southbound US-31 from Grand Haven. The victim was driving a silver Jeep and the suspect was driving a silver Ford Edge. The suspect’s Ford struck the victim’s Jeep near US-31 and Lake Michigan Drive. The suspect continued to follow the victim until the female pulled into the gas station parking lot near US-31/Stanton Street, thinking the male wanted to file a police report for the crash.
When both drivers exited the vehicle, the male suspect physically assaulted the female and touched her inappropriately. The female was able to fight the suspect off and freed herself to contact 9-1-1. The female received minor injuries and was treated at the scene by AMR ambulance.
Detectives continued the investigation and were able to identify the suspect as a 60 year old Muskegon man. Detectives made contact with him in Muskegon on 09/09/24, and took him into custody without incident. The male was lodged at the Muskegon County Jail for Parole Violation and criminal charges are pending for this incident in Ottawa County. His name will not be released at this time.
The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident on Sunday evening to contact the Sheriff’s Office to speak to a detective. Additionally, anyone who may have had similar contact with the suspect is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (616) 738-4000.
