(Portage, MI) – Three tornadoes have been confirmed to have hit southwest Michigan Tuesday night, with the largest being a strong EF-2 tornado that hit Portage. The tornado was on the ground for 22 minutes and crossed eleven miles from Texas Corners northeast nearly to Morrow Lake with wind speeds of 135-miles-an-hour and Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller is thankful people heeded the warnings.

An EF-1 tornado was on the ground for eleven miles in Dowagiac to south of Decatur with wind speeds of 95-miles-an-hour, and the third was another EF-1 tornado that hit south of Union City in Branch County for a mile with 95-mile-per-hour winds. A fourth possible tornado in Branch County in Sherwood is still under investigation.

Portage Public Schools are closed again today due to the EF-2 tornado that tore through the city Tuesday night. The district says none of its buildings were damaged, but they are keeping schools closed due to road closures, power outages, and internet and telephone connectivity issues.

School officials say student and staff safety is the top reason for staying closed.
