Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Chief assistant prosecutor Sarah Matwiejczyk has announced her continued commitment to Ottawa County by running for Ottawa County Prosecutor after the current Prosecutor, Lee Fisher, retires in 2024. Matwiejczyk will run as a Republican.

Matwiejczyk has served the community at the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s office for over 22 years.  She has extensive experience working in all areas of prosecution, as well as training attorneys and police officers at the county and state level.  She has proven her skills in criminal prosecution as a former law school adjunct professor and teaching at both GVSU’s Police Academy and the Prosecuting Attorney’s Association of Michigan.

Prosecutor Lee Fisher endorses Sarah Matwiejczyk and is excited for her opportunity to serve the county in this new capacity.

Fisher asserts, “Sarah is eminently qualified to be the next Prosecuting Attorney for Ottawa County.  I do not believe any other candidate could possess the unique blend of experience, knowledge and integrity required for the position.  She is committed to protecting the rights of crime victims, especially children and their families, and doing so in a fair and ethical manner.  Sarah has, during her twenty plus years working in the Ottawa County Prosecutor’s Office, developed excellent working relationships with law enforcement, social service agencies, and other criminal justice stakeholders that cannot be matched by any other candidate.”

Former Prosecutor Ronald Frantz has also endorsed Matwiejczyk as Ottawa County’s next elected Prosecutor.

“I enthusiastically endorse Sarah Matwiejczyk as Ottawa County’s next Prosecutor.  Her extensive experience working in all areas of the Prosecutor’s Office along with her exceptional trial skills make her exceedingly qualified. Sarah’s dedication to victims and their families of clear.  I have full confidence that Sarah will continue with the same integrity serving as Ottawa County’s next elected Prosecutor,” Frantz said.

Sarah Matwiejczyk also has the full support and endorsement of Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Kempker.

“I fully endorse Sarah Matwiejczyk for Ottawa County Prosecutor.  Throughout her considerable career as a prosecutor, Sarah has always been a strong supporter of law enforcement, and we are grateful for her dedication to prosecuting crime on Ottawa County.  I look forward to continuing working with her as our elected prosecutor,” Kempker affirmed.

Matwiejczyk was vital in establishing a Vulnerable Adult Task Force in Ottawa County.  Additionally, she prosecuted softball coach Thomas Galloway, resulting in his conviction of four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct after sexually assaulting one of his softball players starting at age 13.

“The nature of prosecution requires us to fight for the rights of victims.  Protecting our children and vulnerable adults will continue to be my clear focus,” Matwiejczyk asserted.

Sarah and her husband Eric have lived in Ottawa County for the 20 years they have been married.  They have three daughters and one son.  She comes from a proud family of three generations of Army officer veterans.
