(Grand Haven, MI) – Tim Meyer, prominent progressive Democrat and experienced West Michigan business leader, has officially declared his candidacy for the Michigan State House of Representatives in the 88th District. The announcement was made today by his campaign, “Our Voice in Lansing.”

“I want to go to Lansing to fight for what unites us, not what divides us,” Meyer said. “We need someone who is readily accessible and will work for the people – not someone beholden to partisan interests or corporate agendas. To the detriment of residents, we have seen the cynical politics of division seep from Washington, D.C., to Muskegon County, and especially Ottawa County, where Ottawa Impact has so badly hurt our county government. Our district, now more than ever, needs a representative in Lansing who we know and trust.”

The 88th District now includes parts of Norton Shores in Muskegon County, as well as the “Tri-Cities” of Grand Haven, Ferrysburg, and Spring Lake. Additionally, it includes a substantial area of Ottawa County extending north of New Holland and east of 96th Avenue.

“This district is as winnable as any other because Democrats and independent-minded Republicans have been mobilized in West Michigan by the leadership of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Congresswoman Hillary Scholten on the one hand, and by the incompetence of Ottawa Impact and MAGA on the other,” said Meyer.

Meyer, 67, of Grand Haven Charter Township, believes democracy needs people who care for others and who are willing to work for a better future for all.

And he has done just that, having run for local public office, knocked on doors in three states for former President Barack Obama, leading Grand Haven’s “Obama ‘08” canvassing effort and community organizing for women’s choice issues and other worthy causes.

Meyer has dedicated more than four decades to serving his community as a substitute teacher for Grand Haven Area Public Schools, as a youth group leader for his church, and as a Science Olympiad coach, among many other notable contributions.

He is well-known for founding the successful chain of bicycle stores, Rock ‘n’ Road Cycle, in South Haven, Holland, Muskegon, and Grand Haven.

Meyer is married to Patty Sutherland, the owner of East Lansing Hot Yoga. While his son Matt now oversees the Rock ‘n’ Road stores, his other son Ried manages Great Harvest Bread in Grand Haven. Patty’s two children include Iskandar, a U.S. Navy diver, and Mariam, a potter in Washington State.
