GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Today, Rep. Hillary Scholten (MI-03), a member of the prestigious House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, announced that Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) will receive $8.6 million from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fund safety and efficiency improvement.

This funding is made available by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which was signed into law in November 2021. Specifically, the funds will be used to reconstruct the aircraft rescue and fire-fighting building to continue housing eligible vehicles, equipment, supplies, and personnel.

“The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law has been revitalizing our nation’s aging infrastructure for the last several years, and it’s incredible to see these dollars come back home to West Michigan to support Gerald R. Ford International Airport – a pillar of our region that connects West Michiganders and businesses to people, places, and economies around the world. As the airport continues to grow and expand, our infrastructure must keep up with the demand.

“As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I will continue working in a bipartisan way to secure much-needed investments for GRR to help make sure we’re meeting its safety, security, and operational needs,” said Rep. Scholten.

“We are grateful for the $8.6 million grant made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to construct a new, state-of-the-art aircraft rescue and firefighting facility at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport,” said President and CEO of the Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority Tory Richardson. “This funding supports our commitment to providing world-class safety and security to our passengers, partners, and community members, while also creating job opportunities and driving economic growth in West Michigan.”

Since her first day in office, Rep. Scholten has worked tirelessly to support the growth of GRR. Just recently, she penned a letter to FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker urging the agency to expedite the relocation and replacement of the aging Air Traffic Control Tower.
