Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – This years Coast Guard Festival will not feature a “special needs” carnival day with the Skerbeck Family carnival. Interim Executive Director Sharon Behm gave an update on the festival at the recent Grand Haven City Council meeting.
“It has just become honestly larger than they can take care of. There has been a lot of miscommunication with that throughout the years. It actually was a program that was started by the Skerbeck family and was supposed to run only through the OAISD (Ottawa Area Intermediate School District). Special needs is a great name but really it should have been called accessibility day because it was designed for those who truly do have those types of disabilities where it’s too challenging for them. It takes a lot more time for the Skerbeck staff to be able to help these people on the different rides that were available to them. Overwhelming response of last year, but it was also too over taxing.”
Behm says they re-assess next year. This years theme is Home Town Heroes. Global Guardians. The Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival runs July 28th through August 6th.
