(Grand Haven, MI) – Winter weather alerts are in effect for millions of people across more than 20 states as a powerful storm impacts a large portion of the U.S. this week.
School is closed in West Michigan.
Here in Ottawa County we are under a Winter Storm Warning in effect from 10:00 today through 4 a.m. Thursday. We spoke with Director of Emergency Management for Ottawa County Lou Hunt and asked if roads would be closed. If so, who makes the decision?
“The state run roads, that’s gonna be a decision made by the Governor and State Police. At the county level, we have control of the county and city roads, all the back roads. That would be a state of emergency type situation that we would put out if we got to that point. Obviously the Sheriff of Ottawa County would have a lot to do with that trying to figure out is this what we need to do right now. Kind of weighing it against the freedoms of moving around and commerce.”
If you do have to travel carry an extra blanket, flashlight, gas tank is filled and make sure your phone is fully charged. We use WOOD TV 8 for closings and delays.
