House Committee Approves 25-Year Mandatory Minimum For Terrorism

By Mary Ellen Murphy May 14, 2026 | 7:31 AM

(Lansing, MI) – People who are convicted of terrorism charges in Michigan would face a 25-year mandatory minimum sentence under a bill passed by the state House Judiciary Committee. The bill now advances to the floor of the House. Sponsor Representative Donni Steele says the minimum sentence is needed to hold people who make terroristic threats responsible and says it’s “key to stopping what’s going on” when questioned by Democratic Representative Kelly Breen.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard asked for the bill after his office responded to the 2021 deadly shooting at Oxford High School and the attack in March this year on Temple Israel in West Bloomfield.
