Spring Lake Twp., MI (WGHN) – A section of the North Bank Trail in Spring Lake Township has been closed after a land bridge beneath the trail collapsed Sunday.
Township officials said the portion of the trail between 148th and 144th avenues is unsafe and will remain closed until further notice. Emergency repairs are now being planned, and a detour route is being established along the State Road path north of the trail.
The Grand Haven Tribune reports that Spring Lake Township Manager Gordon Gallagher said the damaged section is expected to remain closed for at least 60 days.
The collapse also caused a sanitary sewer overflow near Lloyd’s Bayou around 12:45 p.m. Sunday. Officials said about 50,000 gallons of discharge affected portions of the bayou north of M-104. Spring Lake Township Public Works crews responded immediately to contain the release, address the issue and begin cleanup operations. Officials said the overflow was stopped roughly four hours later.
Residents are being advised to avoid standing water and nearby surface waters in the affected area until further notice. Warning and detour signs have been posted around the closure.
The incident has also been reported to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy in accordance with state regulations.
Township officials are urging the public to stay away from the damaged trail area due to ongoing safety concerns.
