Gas Prices Surge to $5 Amid Midwest Refinery Disruptions

Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Gas prices have surged to around $5 per gallon in parts of the state, driven largely by refinery disruptions in the region.

According to Patrick De Haan of GasBuddy, the spike is tied in part to an unplanned power outage at BP Whiting Refinery in northwest Indiana. The facility is the largest refinery in the region and supplies a significant share of gasoline to Michigan and neighboring states.

De Haan says the outage, combined with ongoing seasonal refinery maintenance, has already pushed wholesale gasoline prices to levels not seen since 2022, contributing to the sharp increase at the pump.
