By Mary Ellen Murphy Apr 29, 2026 | 7:13 AM

Ottawa County, MI (WGHN) – Ottawa County Emergency Management would like to remind residents that the monthly outdoor warning siren test will take place this Friday.

The sirens will sound for approximately three minutes as part of this routine test.

Why Ottawa County Tests Outdoor Warning Sirens Each Month

Outdoor warning sirens are an important part of Ottawa County’s emergency alert system, designed to warn people who are outside when dangerous conditions are approaching. Monthly testing helps ensure the system is working properly and ready when it’s needed most.

Why the tests matter

Routine tests allow officials to confirm each siren is functioning, identify any maintenance issues, and make sure coverage gaps are addressed. They also help residents recognize the sound of the sirens so they know how to respond during an actual emergency.

What to do when you hear sirens

If sirens sound during the scheduled monthly test, no action is needed.

If sirens sound at any other time, treat it as a real emergency:

  • Go indoors immediately
  • Move to an interior room, away from windows if severe weather is possible
  • Turn on a reliable source of information such as local TV, radio, or trusted online news
  • Follow instructions from local officials

Sirens outside of the scheduled test should never be ignored.

When sirens are used

In Ottawa County, outdoor warning sirens may be activated for:

  • Tornado warnings
  • Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds
  • Hazardous material incidents
  • Other emergencies requiring immediate public alert

Because sirens are meant for people outdoors, they may not be heard clearly inside homes or buildings. Residents are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive alerts, especially overnight.

What to know about the test

  • The test lasts about three minutes
  • All sirens are activated at the same time
  • No follow-up action is required
  • Testing may be postponed if severe weather is in the area
