WASHINGTON, DC – This month, U.S. Representative Hillary Scholten (D-MI-03), member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, introduced the Roadway Resiliency Act. The legislation would establish an interagency working group to study and improve nationwide best practices for roadway management in inclement weather.

“It is critical we continue to update and improve roadway safety practices, especially in places where severe weather can quickly create dangerous conditions,” said Rep. Scholten. “I’m proud to introduce my Roadway Resiliency Act to bring federal agencies together to identify which strategies work best and ensure our communities have the tools they need to implement them. Strengthening roadway safety before emergencies occur saves lives and taxpayer dollars, and I encourage all of my bipartisan colleagues to support this commonsense effort.”

Specifically, the Roadway Resiliency Act would:

  • Require the Secretary of Transportation and the Director of the National Weather Service to establish an interagency working group to develop best practices for roadway management in inclement weather;
  • Require the group to submit those best practices to the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation no later than 180 days after the group’s establishment.

Rep. Scholten introduced this legislation in response to a 100-car pileup during a snowstorm in West Michigan earlier this year.
