Grand Haven North Pier to Close for Major $8.25M Overhaul

Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Major changes are coming to Grand Haven’s north pier. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says construction will begin in April on an $8.25 million project that will shut down the pier for up to two years.

The work includes installing a wave attenuator — that’s a section of the pier that will be removed and replaced with rock to help reduce wave action in the channel and improve safety for boats.

Officials say about 325 feet of the pier will be replaced, and a new walkway will be built for pedestrian access.

The Grand Haven Tribune reports that the project is expected to run through the summer of 2028, with breaks planned during major events like the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival.

Some nearby property owners have raised concerns about impacts to views and beach access, but the Corps says the project is focused on improving safety in the channel.

Once work begins, crews are expected to operate seven days a week, weather permitting.
