Ottawa County, MI (WGHN) – The Ottawa News Network is marking Sunshine Week with a hands-on workshop designed to help Ottawa County residents better understand and use the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

Held each year in mid-March, Sunshine Week coincides with the birthday of James Madison—often called the “Father of the Constitution”

Sarah Leach is a Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist who founded Ottawa News Network:

Board Chair Clay Stauffer underscored the importance of the initiative, calling FOIA “an essential tool for maintaining transparency” and noting that the workshop is intended to empower residents to better understand how government agencies operate on their behalf.
Founded in late 2024, Ottawa News Network is a nonprofit newsroom created to address gaps in local news coverage. Its mission is to provide Ottawa County residents with free, independent, and reliable reporting—while promoting transparency and accountability in government.

Freedom Of Information Act Workshop is free.
