Dave Klaassen, longtime Grand Haven funeral director and community leader, dies

Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Dave Klaassen, a lifelong resident of Grand Haven and a devoted community servant, passed away at 84 after a life marked by faith, family, and extraordinary civic involvement.

Born and raised in Grand Haven, Dave attended Grand Haven Christian School and graduated from Grand Haven High School before continuing his education at the Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science. He dedicated more than 60 years to funeral service, a career defined by compassion and commitment to serving families in their time of need.

Dave was married to his beloved wife, Sandra (Sandy) Wierengo. Together they built a strong and loving family, raising three children and enjoying the blessings of seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A man of deep faith, Dave was an active member of Second Christian Reformed Church, where he served as both deacon and elder. His faith guided a lifetime of service to others.

Dave’s contributions to the Grand Haven community were extensive and far-reaching. He served as a city councilman for the City of Grand Haven from 1979 to 1987, including two years as Mayor Pro-Tem. He also held leadership roles as past president of the Chamber of Commerce, North Ottawa Council on Aging, Kiwanis Club, and the U.S. Coast Guard Festival during its 200th anniversary celebration. His service extended to the Salvation Army Advisory Board, the Grand Haven Lions Club as a charter secretary, and the North Ottawa Hospice Steering Committee as a charter member.

Throughout his life, Dave played a vital role in shaping many local initiatives. He contributed to capital campaigns supporting organizations such as International Aid, United Fund, Love INC, and was instrumental in the development of the Grand Haven Boardwalk, Lighthouse Connector Park, and the original Imagination Station. Dave and Sandy also made a lasting impact by donating the first home to Habitat for Humanity of Grand Haven.

His dedication did not go unnoticed. Dave was honored with the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award “Man of the Year” in 1976, the Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023, the Grand Haven Eagles Community Builder Award in 2015, and induction into the Grand Haven High School Hall of Fame in 2019. In recognition of his service to the Coast Guard community, he received the highest civilian honor awarded by the Commandant.

Dave’s legacy is one of servant leadership, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his community. Whether through his professional work, civic leadership, or volunteer efforts, he touched countless lives across generations.

He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, faithful servant, and a pillar of the Grand Haven community whose impact will endure for years to come.
