Winter Storms Put Power Grid To The Test

(Undated) – America’s power grid is being put to the test by winter storms across most of country. More than a million customers were without electricity on Sunday, sending people scrambling to keep warm amid sub-freezing temperatures in places that rarely see such cold. The Energy Department has granted PJM Interconnection permission to run all of its power sources at full capacity, regardless of pollution regulations. PJM is the nation’s largest electric grid operator. Ice and frozen rain are the main concerns for utility companies as frozen trees and power lines could topple due to the added weight and compression.

Freezing-cold conditions could remain in place through February 1st in many places.
