(Washington, DC) – This Sunday will be the “shortest” day of the year. The Winter Solstice falls on December 21st. That’s when the Northern Hemisphere will be tilted furthest from the Sun and getting the fewest hours of sunlight. The day also marks the first official day of the winter season. Winter Solstice celebrations will be held around the world, including at Stonehenge monument in southern England.
After Sunday, days in the Northern Hemisphere will gradually get longer until the summer solstice in June.
