Study: City Raccoons Show Signs Of Domestication

(Little Rock, AR) – A new study says raccoons that live near humans are showing signs of domestication. The research published in Frontiers in Zoology analyzed around 20-thousand photos of raccoons from across the U.S. The scientists, led by a University of Arkansas at Little Rock researcher found that raccoons in urban areas have shorter snouts than rural based ones.

Shorter snout length is a physical trait tied to “domestication syndrome.” The physical changes usually come as animals become more gentle, tolerant and less aggressive toward humans.
