Olive Twp., MI (WGHN) – A Grand Rapids man is facing several charges after a violent home invasion in Olive Township earlier this week.

Twenty-three-year-old Jason Varnado was arraigned Thursday in Ottawa County on charges including home invasion, felonious assault, and killing or torturing an animal. His bond was set at 250-thousand dollars.

Deputies say Varnado forced his way into a 68-year-old man’s home after asking for water. The homeowner’s dog, an 8-year-old Rottweiler named Chief, stepped between them and was stabbed. The homeowner suffered cuts to his arm but managed to call 911. Chief later died from his injuries.

The suspect ran into the woods but was tracked down with the help of K-9 and drone units. He’s now being held in the Ottawa County Jail.
