Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Ottawa County Commissioner Jacob Bonnema sat down with Mary Ellen Murphy of WGHN radio for a two part interview. In part one Commissioner Bonnema discusses why he decided to run and why he became involved with Ottawa Impact.

In part one you’ll hear how he met with various departments before being sworn in in December of 2022 as he had a planned trip in January of 2022 with his family. It was on that trip where he received a text saying “heads are rolling.” during the infamous January 2023 meeting at the Fillmore Street Complex.

At its first meeting of the year, the newly seated Ottawa Impact majority moved quickly to enact major changes. Commissioners ousted County Administrator John Shay and appointed John Gibbs as his replacement. They also dissolved the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion department, adopted a new county motto, and hired a controversial law firm to take over as corporate counsel. The board additionally attempted to remove Health Officer Adeline Hambley and install HVAC Safety Officer Nate Kelly in her place.
