Grand Haven, MI – The Grand Haven Area Community Foundation (GHACF) has awarded nearly $650,000 in Community Impact Grants to five local organizations. The Outdoor Discovery Center (ODC) received the largest award, a $250,000 grant, to support development of the new Duneside Discovery Center at Mary A. White Elementary School.
Modeled after ODC’s nature-based early childhood education facilities, the new center will open 200 preschool spots for children ages 3–5 in the Grand Haven Area Public Schools (GHAPS) district. At least half of the programs will serve vulnerable populations, including children from low-income families and those with disabilities.
“Supporting the ODC Network’s mission is important on a number of levels,” said Hadley Streng, GHACF President. “This initiative promotes inclusivity, addresses barriers to childcare, and provides our youth with nature’s many benefits, including improved physical and mental health. It strengthens education, our local economy, and the natural environment.”
The ODC–GHAPS partnership will transform Mary A. White into a nature-based early childhood education center. The grant will fund nature playscapes, outdoor classrooms, trails, landscaping, and habitat restoration, with several areas open for public use.
“We have seen firsthand how nature-based early childhood education transforms children’s development and supports teachers,” said John Vincent, ODC Network Chief of Early Childhood Education. “With the support of GHACF and GHAPS, we are excited to expand opportunities for families in northern Ottawa County.”
Kristin Perkowski, GHAPS Superintendent, added: “This project ensures more children have access to a strong start. The Duneside Discovery Center supports our youngest learners, strengthens families, and builds a foundation for long-term success.”
