Ottawa County, MI (WGHN) – Big news for Ottawa County—residents are finally getting connected to high-speed fiber internet, thanks to a $15 million project by Southfield-based provider, 123NET. The project, approved late last year by the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners, includes 325 miles of new fiber lines. When complete, it will bring reliable, high-performance internet to about 2,500 underserved homes and businesses.
Funding comes from multiple sources, including $9 million from the state’s ROBIN grant, $4 million from the county, and nearly $2 million from 123NET. MLive reports that this new fiber connects to 123NET’s 4,000-mile network across Michigan, tying into major internet exchanges in Grand Rapids and Detroit.
Chuck Irvin, 123NET’s Chief Revenue Officer, says the new service will offer speeds from 250 megabits up to 6 gigabits per second—that’s up to 100 times faster than what many locals had before. And it’s open-access, meaning other providers can use the same network, giving consumers more choices.
