By Mary Ellen Murphy Jul 8, 2025 | 7:57 AM

Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – Below is an update on the Fulton Avenue infrastructure project.  The $3 million project, which includes water main and sewer line replacements, and new road and sidewalk construction, will be administratively managed by the Michigan Department of Transportation. The city’s engineer will be the onsite manager overseeing the project.

This week’s project activities:

·         Fulton Avenue, from 1st up to 2nd Street roadway re-built and prepped for gravel

·         Concrete curb and gutter scheduled for Thursday between 1st and 2nd Street

·         1st Street intersection expected to re-open to through traffic by end of the week

·         Water main installation starting at 2nd Street, working towards 3rd Street

·         18-inch water main installation at 2nd Street (dig Friday and completed on Monday, 7/14)

The upcoming construction schedule is outlined below:

Week of July 14th:

·         Water main installation at 2nd Street intersection

·         Sanitary sewer installation between 2nd and 3rd Street

Upcoming:  Storm installation from 2nd to 3rd Street. Fulton will be base paved from 1st to 3rd Street upon completion of these two blocks. Traffic will re-open on the gravel-maintained roadway in advance of base paving (following concrete curb and gutter).

Access to Properties: Access to properties will stay open unless there is active construction happening in front of your driveway. If you have questions or concerns about parking, please look for the on-site inspector (Mark Anthony with Abonmarche Engineering) or talk to one of the contractors for help. Feel free to reach me at 616-502-2674 as well.

Reminder: As crews progress along Fulton, I want to send a friendly reminder about underground sprinkling in the City’s right-of-way. If you have underground sprinkling in the parkway (the area between the sidewalk and the street), we recommend salvaging the sprinkler heads and severing the line(s) that run beneath the sidewalk to the parkway. Neither the city nor the contractor is responsible for restoring the irrigation installed in the parkway.

Construction schedules can often change, but we will do our best to provide up-to-date information in each update or let you know if there are time-sensitive updates.

Access to Properties

Access to properties will remain open unless active construction is occurring in front of your driveway. If you have questions or concerns about parking, please look for the on-site inspector (Mark Anthony with Abonmarche Engineering) or speak to one of the contractors for help. Feel free to contact me at 616-502-2674 as well.

Traffic Control

Fulton Avenue from 1st to 3rd Street remains closed to through traffic. Please be sure to stay alert and watch for detour routes. Exercise caution and be observant when driving or walking through the construction zone. Follow sidewalk detours and do not enter the active construction site. If you encounter any issues with detours, please report them so our team can review and address them if needed.

Site Safety

No accidents have been reported this week. It is a busy and active construction site with materials being moved between blocks. Thank you to all the residents for their attention to safety as you drive to and from your homes and navigate around the construction site.

Services to Properties

Trash—Your trash service will continue as usual moving forward. If construction is happening in your block, please place your containers on the nearest side street, and Republic will pick them up there. If you need help identifying where to place your container or have issues moving your trash, please let me know so we can facilitate a solution.

Mail – Your USPS mail service will not be interrupted, so there is no need to worry about not receiving any mailings.

Delivery Services—During the project, you will always be able to receive deliveries or packages at your property. If there are extenuating circumstances surrounding a delivery, please contact me, and we will help facilitate those needs.

Emergency Services – The contractor will maintain emergency access to your property at all times. This is not only for your health and safety but also for fire responses.
