Parking For Proposed Residence Inn In Grand Haven Is Issue

By Mary Ellen Murphy Jun 20, 2025 | 5:54 AM

(Grand Haven, MI) – The zoning for the corner of Third Street and Washington Avenue in downtown Grand Haven has been changed by the city council for a new Residence Inn, but one problem is remaining. That problem is parking, as the current plan is for 89 spots in a surface lot on the site, but the city and Marriott both require one parking spot for every hotel room.

6PM Hospitality CEO Peter Beukema.

The plans are for the hotel to have 129 rooms, and Beukema says they project to be 60-to-63-percent full year-round so they need a solution “for a one-percent issue, essentially.” The city is looking at allowing overnight parking on the street near the hotel, which is expected to open in 2027.

Grand Haven City Council has a short special meeting at Mulligan’s Hollow on Monday at 11:00 am to consider a resolution of intent to vacate a right of way. One of the conditions of final site plan review for the Marriott Hotel was that a city alleyway that cuts through their property on the Columbus Ave. side needs to be vacated and combined with the main lot. The process starts with a resolution of intent to vacate passed by council, then goes to the Planning Commission for a recommendation, then back to council for action.

The process can take a couple of months, and city staff realized that if they delayed passing the resolution, it may delay the final site plan approval. Then council will hold their employee appreciation picnic.
