Canadian Wildfire Smoke Poses Respiratory Risks

By Mary Ellen Murphy Jun 6, 2025 | 6:12 AM

(Grand Rapids, MI) – The state of Michigan is under an air quality advisory until noon today as a result of the smoke blowing through the state from Canadian wildfires. Corewell Health’s Dr. Julia Becker says she has had patients with asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease experience much worse symptoms than normal, but adds healthy people are also reporting coughing, headaches, and sore throats.

People older than 65, younger than 18, pregnant, work outdoors, or have heart or lung disease are at a higher risk of problems from the smoke. Becker recommends people stay inside as much as possible while the air quality advisory is in place.
