(Grand Rapids, MI) – The Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians are trying again to get federal recognition. Congresswoman Hillary Scholten is reintroducing a bill to recognize the tribe, and says they’ll continue to pursue it to show House leadership they’re serious. The tribes founded 19 historical villages along the river and Chairman Ron Yob says they have lived in the area for over two thousand years.
The Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians last attempt at getting federal recognition ended in 2023.
