(New York, NY) – The Coast Guard is rejecting claims made by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer regarding a fatal ship crash in New York over the weekend. Senator Schumer initially pointed to a Department of Government Efficiency implemented hiring freeze at the U.S. Coast Guard. He argued it could have impeded the Coast Guard’s Vehicle Traffic System, which works in a similar fashion to the air traffic control system.

However, the Coast Guard has issued a statement explaining it was “fully functional during the incident and operating in accordance with established procedures to manage commercial traffic and facilitate safe navigation.” The crash of the Mexican navy ship into the Brooklyn Bridge resulted in two deaths and more than a dozen others were injured.
