(Lansing, MI) – University of Michigan economic researchers estimate 13 thousand jobs in the state are at risk of being lost due to the current trade war and increased tariffs. They expect the 25 percent tariffs on auto imports to remain along with steel and aluminum.
U-of-M researcher Gabriel Ehrlich told lawmakers during Friday’s May 2025 Revenue Estimating Conference that while the tariffs can have a positive effect on domestically-produced vehicle sales, the cost of importing materials will increase production costs and lead to job losses.
