(Grand Rapids, MI) – Five active Grand Rapids police officers and one retired GRPD sergeant took the witness stand to testify on behalf of former officer Christopher Schurr yesterday. Schurr is charged with second-degree murder for shooting and killing Patrick Lyoya during an April 2022 traffic stop.

That was a defense attorney questioning GRPD Captain Chad McKersie. The officers all testified that Schurr didn’t act inappropriately and the shooting of Lyoya was not unreasonable. The victim had managed to get the officer’s Taser from him and they were struggling over that when he was shot in the back of the head.

Defense expert Lon Bartel testified that the bodycam footage shows former officer Christopher Schurr was very tired as he struggled with Patrick Lyoya over his Taser.
