(Grand Rapids, MI) – The second-degree murder trial of former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr starts today in Kent County Circuit Court and is expected to last up to two weeks. Among the witnesses the prosecution plans to call is South Carolina School of Law professor Seth Stoughton, who says the shooting raises “some very significant red flags,” and he also testified for the prosecution in the Minneapolis trial of former police officer Derek Chauvin, who was convicted of killing George Floyd in 2020.

Schurr is accused of killing Patrick Lyoya during a struggle after a traffic stop in April 2022 when Lyoya and Schurr were struggling over the officer’s Taser. He shot the man in the back of the head while both were on the ground in a yard in Grand Rapids.
