GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Today, Congresswoman Hillary Scholten released the following statement on her decision to defend Michigan’s Third District and not run for the newly opened Michigan Senate seat:
“I came to Congress to stand up for West Michigan, and I intend to keep standing up for West Michigan. There are too many fights happening in Washington right now that directly affect the people I represent–fights I won’t walk away from.
When I first ran for Congress, I knew I was running in a traditionally conservative area, one that hadn’t had a Democratic representative in a century. We made history, and now, I’m committed to protecting that history and defending this district.
The work is far from finished. At a time when so many people are feeling scared, uncertain, and unheard, I’m staying to fight for them. The challenges we face in West Michigan–whether it’s access to affordable health care, lowering costs, or ensuring our children have a better future–are too important to leave behind. I’m honored to continue representing and delivering for the families of West Michigan.”
