The Ottawa County Board of Commissioners have settled a lawsuit brought by John Gibbs its former county administrator. In an unexpected move, the board decided to scrap the closed session and voted 6-5 to bring it into open discussion.
The county is set to pay Gibbs a total of $190,000, of which one-third will go toward his attorney’s legal fees. This deal will also remove any reference to his termination from his employee file.
Gibbs, in turn, will release all claims against the county and against Commissioner Joe Moss. Back in February, the board voted 10-1 to fire Gibbs. Once Gibbs was put on paid administrative leave. Former Chair Moss who founded Ottawa Impact , released a number of allegations to the public which were brought on by two county employees hired by Gibbs. Gibbs denied the claims.
Gibbs was hired in January of 2023, immediately after the former board fired the previous county administrator. The settlement is now in the hands of Gibbs and his lawyer.
An employment agreement was approved unanimously for Ottawa County Interim Administrator Gary Rosema. He’ll earn $14,000 per month which works out to $168,000 per year, plus an automobile allowance of $500 per month.
