(Allergan Co., MI) – Ice shelves have been forming on Lake Michigan, and while they may look impressive people are being warned not to climb them. Officials in Saugatuck Township tell WZZM-TV that visitors have been walking out onto the shelf that has formed on the shoreline at Grand Haven State Park. Deputy Fire Chief Chris Mantels says it’s impossible to tell how thick the shelf is, and caves and “ice valleys” have formed.
He says it would be equally dangerous for rescuers to try and help anyone who might fall through.
