(Lansing, MI) – Republicans and Democrats in the state Legislature have different plans to protect the lower wages of tipped workers and change paid sick time policies before they significantly change on February 21st. The tipped minimum wage is scheduled to be the same as regular minimum wage at nearly 15-dollars an hour in five years, but wait staff, bartenders, and others have been calling on lawmakers to stop those increases. House Republicans want to cap tipped minimum wage at 38-percent of the minimum wage, while Senate Democrats want to cap it at 60-percent of the minimum wage by 2035.
The paid sick time changes require businesses with at least ten employees to allow up to 72-hours of paid sick time every year and that can accrue year-to-year. Companies with less than ten employees will have to provide up to 40 hours of paid sick time a year.
