Rep. Scholten Doesn’t Take Orders from Elon Musk

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congresswoman Hillary Scholten (MI-03) voted NO on the unacceptable continuing resolution (CR), which was reconfigured after Elon Musk and Donald Trump killed yesterday’s bipartisan, bicameral deal.

Scholten released the following statement:

“We had a deal – a compromise bill for both parties that would have funded the government and kept our neighbors safe from the impacts of a federal shutdown. Minutes before we were about to vote, Elon Musk – an unelected billionaire – and Donald Trump blew up the deal, forcing Speaker Johnson to create the laughable 11th-hour CR we just voted on.

“This bill was not crafted as a compromise – it is precisely what Donald Trump and Elon Musk want – a blank check to run up government debt on the taxpayer’s dime. And it’s cruel. It cuts funding for child cancer research, eliminates protections to stop prescription price gouging, and kicks the can down the road on setting a reasonable debt ceiling.

“West Michiganders sent me here to defend against this fiscal recklessness, so while weak Republicans may vote to pass the Musk-Trump budget, I did not.”

Congresswoman Hillary Scholten is a fourth-generation West Michigander and the first woman and mother to represent West Michigan Michigan’s Third Congressional District. As one of the most bipartisan members of Congress – Scholten works across the aisle to forge a brighter future for West Michiganders by expanding economic security, building stronger communities, and advocating for responsible governance.
