No-Show Ends Wednesday Attempts To Change Michigan Minimum Wage Law

By Mary Ellen Murphy Dec 19, 2024 | 6:00 AM

(Lansing, MI) – Michigan’s tipped workers may be hit because lawmakers in Lansing once again didn’t show-up to vote. Republican lawmakers refused to show-up at the Capitol yesterday. They say their absence was a protest against Democratic House Speaker Joe Tate’s handling of the law to raise the tipped minimum wage. Republicans want to change that law before it takes effect in February, and accuse Tate of failing to deliver the vote he promised. Democrats, as expected, say Republicans are the ones who are falling. Attorney General Dana Nessel took to Facebook yesterday to call the Republican no-show ‘literally criminal.’ Without a vote this week, Michigan will end its lower minimum wage for tipped workers.

Republicans say that could force many bars and restaurants to close, and hurt the people who currently depend on tips.
