Grand Haven, MI (WGHN)- Schools are closed in West Michigan today. The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids has a Winter Storm Warning expiring at 1:00 a.m. Friday.
Reports of whiteout conditions and slide offs on area roads and expressways are making the commute tricky. A helpful Facebook page to follow is Ottawa County Road Conditions. Also US-31 Informed Drivers-Michigan is helpful too on Facebook.
Here is what we can expect today:
* WHAT...Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations up to 8 inches. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph. * WHERE...Portions of southwest and west central Michigan. * WHEN...Until 1 AM EST Friday. * IMPACTS...Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow. The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages. Visibility and road conditions may change rapidly over short distances in lake effect snow. Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. During lake effect snow, the weather can vary from bands of locally heavy snow to dry weather just a few miles away. Visibilities can also vary greatly. Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility, and road conditions.
