DOJ Investigating Whether Michigan Unnecessarily Institutionalizes Mental Illness Patients

(Lansing, MI) – The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating allegations that Michigan is unnecessarily institutionalizing mental health patients in state hospitals. Federal officials announced yesterday the DOJ will determine whether the state violated the Americans with Disabilities Act. Michigan is accused of failing to provide community-based mental health treatment as an alternative to state-run psychiatric institutions.

Under the law states are required to allow patients to leave these institutions when their health allows and transition to mental health services provided in their community
