Grand Haven, MI (WGHN) – October is Michigan Agritourism Month! What is agritourism, you ask? Agritourism is the growing overlap between two of Michigan’s top three industries – tourism and agriculture. Working farms and agricultural businesses have opened their doors (and barns, and orchards, and acreage) to the public. Pure Michigan’s Nick Nerbonne tells us all about it.
Let’s start with some agritourism fun facts:
- Michigan has more than 45,000 farms totaling 9.4 million acres of farmland
- 85% of those farms are individual, family owned farms
- Michigan produces more than 300 agricultural products which had a market value of $12.2 billion in 2022
- Agritourism revenue jumped from $20 million in 2017 to $56 million in 2022 – this industry is growing (pun intended).
